2001 Centenary of Federation Holey Dollar & Dump Silver Coin

Issued by The Perth Mint to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Australian Federation, this innovative silver proof coin recreates the famous Holey Dollar and Dump concept that forms an important part of Australia’s numismatic history.

The coin consists of an outer ring known as the Holey Dollar and a removable seven-pointed star centre known as the Dump. Together they form a single legal tender issue with a combined face value of $1.25. The outer ring displays the badges of Australia’s states and territories surrounding the central Federation Star opening, while the centre piece features a stylised representation of Parliament House and the dates 1901–2001.

Struck from .999 fine silver with a proof finish, the design pays tribute to Federation and the development of modern Australia. The obverse of both components carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Combining historical inspiration, precious metal content and an unusual interlocking format, this issue remains one of the more distinctive Australian commemorative silver releases.
