Description

1909 King Edward VII Sydney Mint Gold Sovereign – 22ct Gold

The 1909 King Edward VII Gold Sovereign is a historic British Empire gold coin struck at the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint in Australia. Produced in 22 carat (.9167 fine) gold, this sovereign weighs 7.98 grams and contains approximately 7.322 grams (0.2354 troy ounces) of pure gold. It forms part of the respected Edward VII sovereign series issued between 1902 and 1910 and represents one of the final sovereign issues struck during the Edwardian era.

The obverse features the uncrowned “Bare Head” portrait of King Edward VII, designed by George William de Saulles. The reverse showcases Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St. George and the Dragon design, widely regarded as one of the most celebrated motifs in world numismatics. The small “S” mintmark beneath the exergue identifies this coin as a Sydney Mint issue, linking it to Australia’s oldest Royal Mint branch and its important role in the nation’s gold minting history.

The 1909 Sydney Mint Sovereign is highly regarded by collectors and investors due to its combination of historic significance, Australian mint heritage, and recognised gold content. With a relatively modest mintage compared to many London Mint sovereigns of the same period, it remains a desirable addition to both sovereign collections and precious metals portfolios.
