Description

1909 King Edward VII London Mint Gold Sovereign – 22ct Gold

The 1909 King Edward VII Gold Sovereign is a historic British gold coin struck at the Royal Mint in London during the final years of Edward VII’s reign. Produced in 22 carat (.9167 fine) gold, this sovereign weighs 7.98 grams and contains approximately 7.322 grams (0.2354 troy ounces) of pure gold. It forms part of the highly regarded Edward VII sovereign series issued between 1902 and 1910 and represents one of the last sovereigns struck before the accession of King George V.

The obverse features the uncrowned “Bare Head” portrait of King Edward VII, designed by George William de Saulles. The reverse showcases Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St. George and the Dragon design, a celebrated motif that has appeared on sovereigns since 1817. As a London Mint issue, this coin carries no mintmark beneath the exergue, distinguishing it from Australian branch mint sovereigns struck in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth.

The 1909 London Mint Sovereign is sought after by both collectors and investors for its historic significance, classic sovereign design, and internationally recognised gold content. With a substantial mintage exceeding 15 million coins, it remains one of the more obtainable Edward VII sovereign issues while retaining strong numismatic and bullion appeal.
