Description

1908 King Edward VII Sydney Mint Gold Sovereign – 22ct Gold

The 1908 King Edward VII Gold Sovereign is a historic British Empire gold coin struck at the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint in Australia. Produced in 22 carat (.9167 fine) gold, this sovereign weighs 7.98 grams and contains approximately 7.322 grams (0.2354 troy ounces) of pure gold. It forms part of the prestigious Edward VII sovereign series issued between 1902 and 1910 and represents the final years of sovereign production at the historic Sydney Mint.

The obverse features the uncrowned “Bare Head” portrait of King Edward VII, designed by George William de Saulles. The reverse showcases Benedetto Pistrucci’s legendary St. George and the Dragon design, one of the most recognised images in world coinage. The small “S” mintmark beneath the exergue identifies this coin as a Sydney Mint issue, connecting it to Australia’s oldest Royal Mint branch and its significant role in the nation’s gold minting history.

The 1908 Sydney Mint Sovereign is highly sought after by collectors and investors due to its historical significance, recognised gold content, and relatively modest mintage of approximately 2.017 million pieces. It remains a desirable Australian branch mint sovereign with strong appeal among numismatists and precious metal enthusiasts.
