Historic Melbourne Mint Gold Half Sovereign

The 1873 Melbourne Mint Half Sovereign is an early Australian gold coin struck during the reign of Queen Victoria. Featuring the classic Young Head portrait on the obverse and the traditional Crowned Shield reverse, this issue forms part of the highly regarded Australian colonial half sovereign series.

Produced at the Melbourne Mint and identified by the “M” mintmark beneath the shield, the coin was struck to the traditional half sovereign standard in 22-carat gold. The reverse displays the crowned shield of the United Kingdom surrounded by the inscription “BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:”, while the obverse features Queen Victoria’s youthful portrait designed by William Wyon.
