Description

1905 King Edward VII Sydney Mint Gold Sovereign – 22ct Gold

The 1905 King Edward VII Gold Sovereign is a historic British Empire gold coin struck at the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint in Australia. Produced in 22 carat (.9167 fine) gold, this sovereign weighs 7.98 grams and contains approximately 7.322 grams (0.2354 troy ounces) of pure gold. It belongs to the distinguished Edward VII sovereign series issued between 1902 and 1910 and represents an important period of early 20th-century British and Australian coinage.

The obverse features the uncrowned “Bare Head” portrait of King Edward VII, designed by George William de Saulles. The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s legendary St. George and the Dragon design, one of the most recognisable motifs in world numismatics. The small “S” mintmark beneath the exergue identifies this coin as a Sydney Mint issue, connecting it to Australia’s oldest Royal Mint branch and rich gold minting history.

The 1905 Sydney Mint Sovereign is especially desirable among collectors due to its relatively lower mintage compared with the Melbourne and Perth issues of the same year. Combining historical significance, Australian mint heritage, and internationally recognised gold content, it remains a sought-after sovereign for both collectors and precious metal investors.
