1931 George V South Africa Mint Gold Sovereign

The 1931 George V South Africa Mint Gold Sovereign is a historic branch-mint sovereign struck at Pretoria while the facility operated as a branch of The Royal Mint. Produced in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams and contains around 0.2354 troy ounces of pure gold.

The obverse features Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal’s smaller portrait of King George V, used on sovereigns during the later years of his reign. The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic depiction of St George on horseback slaying the dragon, with the year 1931 below. The small “SA” mintmark identifies the coin as a Pretoria, South Africa issue.

A total of 8,511,792 sovereigns were struck at Pretoria in 1931. The issue comes from the closing years of circulating Sovereign production, with Pretoria remaining the final branch mint to continue striking sovereigns after production had ceased at most other locations.
