1980 South Africa ½ oz Gold Krugerrand

The 1980 Half Ounce Gold Krugerrand is one of the earliest fractional Krugerrand coins introduced by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery. Launched in 1980 alongside other smaller denominations (¼ oz and 1/10 oz), it offers a collectible and investment-worthy format carrying half a troy ounce of gold.

Obverse Design

  • Features the left-facing portrait of Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic (1883–1900). Inscription: “SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA”. Design by Otto Schultz.

Reverse Design

Depicts a springbok antelope a national symbol of South Africa, encircled by “½ KRUGERRAND”, the year “1980”, and the gold content denoted in both Afrikaans and English: “FYNGOUD 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD.”
