1963 Queen Elizabeth II Young Head London Mint Gold Sovereign

The 1963 Gold Sovereign features Queen Elizabeth II’s “Young Head” portrait by Mary Gillick—her first coinage effigy. Struck at the Royal Mint in London, it was produced during the bullion revival era (1957–1968) and remains one of the more common modern sovereigns.

Obverse Design:

Displays a youthful laureate bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, designed by Mary Gillick.

The Latin inscription reads: “ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRATIA·REGINA·F:D:” (“Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith”).

Reverse Design:

Features Benedetto Pistrucci’s classical depiction of St George slaying the dragon, with the designer’s initials “B.P.” and the date “1963” below.
