The 1893 Gold Sovereign featuring Queen Victoria’s “Veiled Head” portrait was minted at the Royal Mint’s Sydney branch. Not only does it represent a significant design transition in Victorian coinage, but it also includes both former (Jubilee) and new (Veiled Head) obverse portraits minted in the same year.
Obverse Design:
Displays Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a crown and veils—designed by Sir Thomas Brock. The initials T.B. are visible under the bust.
The legend reads: “VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP.”
Reverse Design:
Features the iconic St George slaying the dragon motif by Benedetto Pistrucci, dated “1893.” The Sydney Mint mark (“S”) is situated above the date in the field.
